Whenever I see fields and pastures like this, I try to imagine how long people have lived in close proximity to produce the retaining walls and gentle curves to catch water and develop soil to grow the crops or pasture. What intrigues me is that Romans used this valley to travel from the city of caesar augustus in Spain, now Saragossa, to illura in Gaul, now Oloron. Where farmers herding their sheep here then?
