Clark and Heidi made the decision that the space for stairway from the Lower East Side to the upper levels could not come out of the space for the guests' rooms. That meant access had to be provided through the west stone wall.

Against the advice of the artisans of the village we removed the supporting wall running the length of the barn to replace it later with a sheetrock wall.

Once again we had no heavy equipment, but with shovel, pickaxe, and wheelbarrow we removed the stone and dirt for the passage.
