| Removing the plaster laid bare the stone walls. This wall, on the west side of the Lower East Side is probably the oldest wall in the house. The stones, by comparison with the rest of the building are fairly regular in shape and size. When we dug out the stairway and the shower room later, we found that on the back side of the wall the stones are not set in mortar but instead in compacted dirt. | ||||||||
