Whenever he had a spare moment Clark set new, more substantial lintels above the doors, squared up the side supporting walls, and filled the space above with stone. Often he also poured reinforced concrete beams above the lintels to stabilize the walls.

By knocking out the rotten, old mortar he often opened the wall all the way to the outside.

Finding corncobs in the wall evidenced that in the past rats had lived in the walls and carried their lunch home with them.
